Not every task in grid operation requires the same view of measurement data. While every individual load peak can be critical during fault analysis, day-to-day grid operation often benefits from a more stable representation of network loading. Grid planning, on the other hand, requires a realistic assessment of typical peak loads without allowing individual outliers to distort the overall picture.
With the latest update, the SMIGHT IQ Cockpit now offers three different views of the selected load time series. All three are based on the same measurement data but present it in different ways, providing exactly the information needed for each specific use case. In addition, administrators can define which view is displayed by default in the IQ Cockpit. Individual users can switch between the available views at any time.
1-Minute Values – Maximum Transparency for Detailed Analysis
The 1-minute view displays the raw measurement data without any aggregation. Every load peak and every short-term change remains visible.
This view is particularly suitable for:
fault and event analysis,
root cause analysis of unusual grid conditions,
detailed evaluation of individual load profiles.
If you want to understand exactly what happened at a specific point in time, this is the right view.
15-Minute Average – The Operational View
The 15-minute view displays the average of the underlying 1-minute measurements, providing a smoothed representation of network loading.
It is particularly suitable for:
- day-to-day assessment of grid utilization,
- operational decision-making,
- evaluating switching operations and network reconfiguration.
By averaging the data, the overall loading becomes easier to interpret while short-term peaks are smoothed out. This provides a clear picture of the operational grid state. However, it should not be used to draw conclusions about the behavior of protection devices or protection system operation.
P95 – The Planning View
The P95 view (95th percentile) is primarily designed for grid planning. Like the other views, it is based on the measured 1-minute values. However, it deliberately excludes the highest five percent of short-term load peaks. Instead, it calculates a robust statistical value below which 95 percent of all measurements fall. This removes isolated outliers and provides a reliable basis for planning decisions.
The P95 view is particularly suitable for:
- evaluating available grid capacity,
- prioritizing grid reinforcement measures,
- supporting long-term planning decisions.
The 95th percentile is intentionally not the highest load ever measured. Instead, it represents a realistic peak value that reflects the typical network loading more accurately and therefore provides a much more meaningful basis for grid planning.
One Default View – Full Flexibility for Every User
With this update, administrators can define which of the three views is displayed by default in the SMIGHT IQ Cockpit. This ensures that every user starts with the perspective best suited to their role—for example, grid operators with the 15-minute average view or grid planners with the P95 view.
Whenever a different perspective is required, users can switch between the three views with just a few clicks. The selected aggregation method is applied consistently across the load time series, overview map and dashboard statistics, ensuring a uniform and intuitive user experience.
