Founded in 1917 by a group of committed local citizens, Elektrizitätsgenossenschaft Großwilfersdorf has grown from a local initiative into a modern distribution system operator and energy supplier serving more than 1,900 grid customers. Today, its four hydropower plants generate around 3.5 million kWh of renewable electricity each year, supplying approximately 850 households. To support future grid reinforcement and modernization, the utility has deployed SMIGHT Grid2 to gain detailed visibility into its low-voltage network. The project demonstrates how data-driven grid transparency helps distribution system operators prioritize investments, validate network conditions, and prepare their grids for the challenges of the energy transition.Where are investments
needed most?
Like many distribution system operators, Elektrizitätsgenossenschaft Großwilfersdorf faces familiar challenges: a distribution grid that has evolved over decades, growing demands driven by the energy transition, and increasing investment needs within limited budgets. To make grid reinforcement and renewal more targeted and data-driven, the utility has been piloting the SMIGHT Grid2 low-voltage monitoring solution since autumn 2025. The objective is to gain a reliable, real-world view of network conditions for the first time.
The selected pilot substations were expected to experience significant reverse power flows due to the high penetration of rooftop photovoltaics. While the previously installed metering equipment primarily measured energy consumption, SMIGHT Grid2 now provides full visibility into reverse power flows and their impact on the low-voltage network.
The resulting data has become a valuable basis for investment planning. Across the service area, overhead service lines are being replaced with underground cables, service connections are being modernized, and aging secondary substations are being renewed. At the same time, the increasing integration of photovoltaic systems and the growing electrification of the low-voltage grid require network operators to reassess where reinforcement measures are actually needed.

A complete view of the network
Today, three secondary substations and one distribution cabinet are equipped with SMIGHT Grid2. In addition to transformer monitoring, all outgoing feeders are continuously monitored.
Thanks to the SMIGHT Grid2 Sensor Flex, the solution could be installed quickly and easily in all substations, regardless of the available installation space. The combination provides a comprehensive view of network conditions, making it easier to assess load flows, reverse power flows and the utilization of grid assets.

Use Case: Evaluating Load Peaks

One of the first key insights came from a feeder supplying a wastewater treatment plant. The pumps generate high inrush currents during start-up, creating pronounced peaks in the load profile.
At first glance, these peaks appeared critical. However, continuous monitoring revealed that the increased load occurred only for short periods and did not place the network assets under sustained stress. During the pilot, a planned cable reinforcement was also completed, and its impact became immediately visible in the measured data.
The example demonstrates the value of continuous grid monitoring. Rather than relying on assumptions or isolated measurements, distribution system operators can assess actual network conditions and make better-informed investment decisions based on real data.
From intuition to
data-driven decisions
For Elektrizitätsgenossenschaft Großwilfersdorf, the greatest benefit of the project is a more reliable basis for decision-making. Grid reinforcement measures can be prioritized more effectively, while investment decisions are supported by objective, measurable data – both for internal stakeholders and external partners.
The monitoring data also serves as an early warning system. Emerging issues become visible long before they develop into critical situations, enabling the utility to assess risks and take action proactively. In the future, these insights will help guide both grid planning and network operation on an increasingly data-driven basis.
Outlook & Conclusion

Transparency as the Foundation for Grid Modernization
The pilot project has now been running for more than six months. Although other infrastructure investments are currently taking priority, Elektrizitätsgenossenschaft Großwilfersdorf already considers the insights gained to be an important building block for the future development of its distribution network.
One key lesson has become clear: Only the combination of load and reverse power flow transparency provides a reliable basis for assessing actual grid conditions, prioritizing investments and making decisions based on measured data rather than assumptions.
