Fellbach municipal utilities
Enabling e-mobility | Grid connection issues
Stadtwerke Fellbach (SWF) is actively tackling the challenges posed by the energy transition. In addition to operating a large number of its own PV and CHP plants, this also includes expanding the grid. For years, it has been increasing cable cross-sections and equipping transformer stations with 630 kVA transformers in order to cope with the increasing dynamics in the grid due to new consumers such as electric vehicles and heat pumps, as well as feed-in from PV systems. In addition, SWF already operates five public AC charging stations in the city area, but plans to significantly expand the charging infrastructure in 2022. As part of the now-ended KfW subsidy program for private wallboxes, there was a significant increase in grid connection inquiries in Fellbach. It was challenging to process these optimally and take the new consumers into account for grid planning.Measurement data shows
uneven utilization
The network operator therefore set out to find a solution for obtaining data from the low-voltage system and opted for SMIGHT Grid. After just a few weeks, it was possible to see which transformers in Fellbach were already exceeding threshold values and to reduce loads through targeted switching. The identification of unbalanced loads also made it possible to distribute the load more evenly across the network.
Outlook & Conclusion
Now that Fellbach has laid the foundations for network digitalization by implementing the SMIGHT solution, further projects are being tackled at a rapid pace. For example, work is currently underway on a process for identifying suitable locations for public charging stations. There is also a desire to place a special focus on documenting the charging infrastructure that has been set up and all feeders. Network operation can only function if all “players” in the network are known and visible. The ideal solution would be an intelligent cable distribution cabinet that communicates with all wall boxes in the cable harness, distributes power optimally, and thus makes perfect use of the cables.
